I was having a clear out of one of my email inboxes the other day and found something I completely forgot about. It was something I wrote to a subscriber sometime last summer in response to his struggles at making money online.

I understood exactly where he was coming from because just about everyone faces the same problems – including me. Instead of just sending the email into the digital wastebasket, I thought it would make a good post, and possibly help somebody else.

Here it is, with some parts removed for privacy reasons.

Hi,

First of all, don’t listen to people who have negative viewpoints as they will only put you off.

Now, to be honest with you, the internet marketing niche is probably the toughest one to break into so I would advise you to go into other niches if you want to make money.

I started out by building one WordPress website in the relationship niche and like many, I thought money would come rolling in from affiliate sales. I knew nothing about WordPress and FTP but I learned as I went along. I am technically-minded and had done a lot of computer programming so it wasn’t too hard to get my head around.

To flesh out the site I used content from the product merchants I was affiliated to and wrote some articles myself. I also submitted my own articles to article directories to get traffic. That was it really. I thought traffic would come pouring in. Little did I know at the time.

I didn’t make a single sale for a couple of months and the first year I only made around $1000 dollars from it. I used this small amount of money to build more websites in other niches. That first site of mine has been changed a lot since I started it but it’s been #1 on Google for a couple of years now and gets very steady traffic. It has good content and fills a certain need for many people.

The point here is to only go into niches that give people something they really need.

Domains don’t cost much and it won’t take long to create a site with WordPress and add some unique articles. You can write them yourself, rewrite some PLR or you can have them written for you for a few dollars each.

Getting traffic is the hardest part and where most people give up. To build traffic submit your RSS feeds, submit your posts to social bookmarking sites, Web 2.0 properties, comment on blogs, post on forums, create free blogs linking back to your main site, all the usual promotional tactics.

Once you have built and done some promotion for a site you can then monetize it with affiliate offers. If it makes just one sale a week it pays for your hosting many times over. Repeat this in a number of niches and soon you should have a steady income from multiple websites.

And be patient as it could take some time for some to get off the ground like my first site did.

Truth is though, to be a success in IM you must have your own product and brand yourself as an expert as you said. And, if you haven’t realised by now most IM products are knockoffs of others and once you have seen one you’ve just about seen them all.

So don’t go buying the latest hyped up IM product unless you are sure you need it as you will probably be wasting money. There is some absolute rubbish being promoted but there are a few quality IM products once in a while. Whatever you do, don’t fall for the get rich quick stuff. If it worked why are they selling it to you?

As for tools, Market Samurai is really good for keyword research and lots more beside… in fact I used it today to quickly find some RSS feeds to add to one of my sites.

Bottom line is, get into multiple niches because all the gurus do that and make a killing at it.

It will mean lots of hard work and can be very boring at times but think of the rewards.

The naysayers will look at you differently then, won’t they?

What is it with internet marketing product launches nowadays? Every time a promo email for the latest product launch hits our inbox and we hastily head on over to the sales page (via the affiliate link of course) to see what the fuss is all about we are confronted with…nothing.

It’s becoming a regular occurrence that the servers have once again crashed under the strain of hordes of would-be buyers eager to run their credit card debt up even farther.

If these internet marketing gurus are so far ahead of the game why can’t they get their product launches right? I know it’s probably easier said than done but the so-called experts should have learned a thing or two by now, surely?

To be honest the promo emails are starting to wear a little thin just lately as well. For many, the initial excitement and novelty of internet marketing has worn off and they are getting a little bored with all the hyped-up emails flooding into their inbox, including me.

The strange thing is that some of the bonuses offered by JV partners are often better than the product they are promoting. In fact, I suspect that lots of us buy the newly launched product more for the bonus offered by the affiliate than the product itself.

Makes you wonder if the internet marketing product they are promoting is that good after all, doesn’t it?

Sadly, for some people buying internet marketing products has become something of an addiction. And there’s lots of money to be made from all the desperate buyers out there who need their latest product fix. Many don’t even use the IM products either; they just buy them because it makes them feel like they are doing something.

It reminds me of the gambling phrase ‘going on tilt’ where a losing gambler tries to win back the money they have already lost by becoming more reckless with their bets. They have wasted so much money already that they think just one more purchase might do the trick.

It rarely does.

If you are on lots of internet marketers lists, I am sure you have received multiple emails promoting a newly launched Clickbank product. Many of these will contain identical content because they are just cut-and-paste emails provided for joint venture partners.

So, if so many affiliates are promoting the same Clickbank product on the same day and using identical or very similar emails then what do the successful affiliates use to increase their Clickbank affiliate sales?

You have been busy working for many months on a internet marketing product that you are certain will be a surefire success. You have carefully tested it out and it looks just great.

All you have to do now is launch it to your target market and sit back while hordes of eager customers come stampeding onto your website to buy it. After all, it is a great product so why shouldn’t you be so confident?

But then disaster strikes. Nobody buys your fantastic product even though you know it’s the best. What’s even worse they buy a competitors product instead, which you know for a fact is not a patch on yours.

Really frustrating after all the hard work and time you put into it.

So what was it that made people decide to buy an inferior product from the competition instead of you? Is it because they are uninformed or just plain stupid? Or was it the sales pitch that convinced them to buy an inferior product?

There are many things that motivate people to choose one product instead of another. They will buy it even it is clearly not the better of the two and not even the best value for money.

For many internet marketing products in general most people buy because they think they will show them:

• How to make lots of money – to ease their financial troubles or get them the things they desire most.
• In the shortest time possible – because most people are impatient.
• With the least amount of work – because most people hate hard work.

So if an internet marketing product offers them the opportunity to get more money with which to have a better life and more time to enjoy it then to them it is just what they need – and who can blame them?

If you can’t convince them that your product will do all this for them they will find one that does, or at least promises to. That is why so many people fall for the get-rich-quick type of products because they promise all this.

Overcoming the logical mind of your potential customer and appealing to their emotions is just one of the tools used by marketing experts. They have many techniques that will make a poor or average product into an incredible seller.

Once you understand what really motivates people to buy an internet marketing product you will then be able to talk to your own target market far better and make more sales.

Google seems to be taking such a hammering from Clickbank product vendors just lately that I am surprised it is still in one piece. It must be a pretty tough old bird to withstand the unrelenting assaults on it from the thousands of people who bought information products related to it.

A quick scan through the Clickbank Marketplace shows the following products which use Google in their name. There are probably more that I missed, which doesn’t bother me a whole lot :0).

• Google Ambush
• Google Revenge
• Google Nemesis
• Google Snatch
• Google Assassin
• Google Massacre
• Google Slapper
• Google Manipulator
• Google Goodbye

Whenever I see these type of  product names I immediately think ‘Oh no, not another one’.  I would like to know how many people have actually bought one of these because of the name and, more to the point, did the product live up to the claims?  I haven’t personally bought any of them so I can’t honestly say if they are good or bad. lf you have though, I would like to know what you thought of your purchase.

I suppose some of them must contain useful information about gaming Google to get more traffic or making money with Adwords or Adsense, but how much of it is repackaged from other information products that came before them?  Quite a bit I imagine.

On the subject of getting more traffic, everyone should realise that Google is not the only way of getting traffic to your website but it is one of the most important ones.  The thing is, the best way is to work with Google and not against it.

The point I am trying to make is that Google is not your enemy, but an ally which you  get on your side by doing things the way Google likes things done.  Like it or not, that is the reality of using Google as part of your internet marketing strategy.

If some of the products mentioned show you new ways on how to use Google to increase your website traffic, then fair enough, but a lot of good information to do this is freely available on the internet already.

Good content and plenty of back links from various sources are the basics of getting ranked well with Google so focus on that and you will do just fine.

The fact is, Google is still very much alive and will be for some time yet so use it to your advantage.

If you’ve spent any amount of time learning about Internet Marketing, you know that eventually you’re going to need your own product. Product creators are at the top of the scale when it comes to income. Affiliate income is nice, but the real paychecks start coming in when you have hundreds to thousands of people directing traffic to your site to buy your offer.

But how do you set up a sales funnel for your product?

It’s all very well having a product to sell but where do you start? There are tons of products out there that teach you how to write your own product, or hire someone to do it. You can throw a stone in any marketing forum and hit a dozen different ghostwriters.
