I am sure you will agree that the more people that visit your web site, the more money you make! But if no one can find your web site it won’t happen! If you can’t generate web traffic to your website, you may as well quit now!

Finding how to get web site traffic is one of the things that niche website owners find difficult. How frustrating is it to build a website and fill it with high quality content and no one ever sees it? I have been there trust me.

Bottom line: You have to improve web site traffic or it will die.

How to get more website traffic?

You could always buy website traffic I suppose but if you are just starting out then it may be beyond your financial reach for the time being. You could use article marketing but it’s time-consuming if you have to write the articles yourself, and can be expensive if you need lots of good quality unique articles.

Submitting to social bookmarking sites, directories, RSS feed directories, search engines, are ways to increase traffic to a website but once again the downside of that is the tedious, time-consuming work involved…creating dozens of accounts, submitting the URLs…. my eyes glaze over at the mere thought.

But you don’t have to do it all yourself…

Traffic – the lifeblood of any website.

No doubt about it, every internet marketing or business website needs plenty of traffic to survive. No traffic means no sales to pay for hosting or anything else for that matter.

The obvious question now is; what is the best way to drive website traffic?

There’s no doubting the power of article marketing for driving relevant traffic to a website.

It’s a deceptively simple formula...

• Write articles and submit them to article directories.
• Continue to do this on a regular basis.
• The more articles you write the more traffic you will get.

It sounds simple and it is…in theory.

There’s a little bit more to it though…

Let’s face it…so many articles to be found on the internet and on article directories are extremely vague and badly written to boot.

Most people will read the first paragraph and exit. Articles like this are not worth reading because they bring little value to the reader.

Therefore, to be a successful article marketer, you must write quality articles and present yourself as an expert in your chosen field. If your articles are well-written, interesting and highly relevant to your website topic then readers should also be interested enough to visit your website via the link in your resource box.

Here’s a tip for you…

After you have written your article read it a back to yourself a number of times as if you were just a reader. Did you find it interesting and informative? If not rewrite it until it is. Be brutally honest because your real readers will be much tougher judges than yourself.

When you are finally happy with your article it should be submitted to the top article directories.

Be sure each directory you are submitting the articles to is considered an authority by Google.

Your ultimate goal is to have your article reach the front page in the Google rankings, with the coveted top spot the main prize. Not always possible but if you don’t aim high you will always fall short.

OK…now you’ve got the traffic now what?

Even if you are successful at using article marketing to drive more traffic to your website, if your visitors find your content is of little value, they will exit at the click of a mouse button, defeating the whole purpose of getting them there in the first place

Your website visitors will want to see interesting and fresh content which shows a good level of knowledge on your website. If they do they will come back again and again. With a bit of luck you may get them to sign up for a subscription to your newsletter. It’s an indisputable fact that building your subscriber list is one the most important activities an internet marketer can do.

By following these simple guidelines, you will be able to drive more website traffic with every article you write. Each one is building up your online presence. It’s a fact that writing articles is time-consuming and can be tedious, so the difficult part is forcing yourself to take action. The ones that do get down to work will reap the rewards for years to come.

Can social bookmarking sites really bring in a ton of traffic or is it a load of hype? Well I tried an experiment on one of my websites that received very little traffic and this is what happened.

Before I tell you what actually happened, you may already know that social bookmarking sites are a proven way of bringing in traffic and StumbleUpon is one of the best for this purpose. I submit pages from some of my sites to StumbleUpon on a regular basis as I know that it will get me traffic but, in general, not very much. I suppose it’s hit and miss in some respects like a lot of website promotion.

Even so, any traffic is welcome, but until the other day I never thought it would work like it did on a site of mine that I rarely updated. Because of this, traffic has dropped off to less than 10 visitors a day on average but it still pays its way – just. As it is a WordPress site and was looking a little dated I decided to change the theme and, at the same time, added some new Adsense units and other affiliate ads.

After doing all this I have to say I was pretty pleased with the new look and decided to have a little experiment to see if I could boost the traffic.

This was just a little test using something that I learned from a new ebook called Traffic Landslide. This will show you loads of ways to get free traffic to your website. And free traffic is what we all want isn’t it?

Anyway, one of the posts on that site has been there since August 2007 and never got much attention until I finally decided to submit it to StumbleUpon.

So I went ahead and submitted just this one page to StumbleUpon and got on with more pressing things.

Well, just one day later I was checking my Adsense stats and saw that I had over 2000 impressions on this website alone. Now remember this site was getting single digit visitors only. I then decided to check Google Analytics to verify this traffic and was gobsmacked to see I had had 3509 visitors in one day! See the graph below for proof.

And guess where the majority of these came from?

You guessed it. StumbleUpon!

Out of 3509 visitors, 3237 of them came from StumbleUpon which was a staggering result. I think this had a knock-on effect as I also had another 266 visitors from direct sources which is way more than I have ever had in one day for this particular site. Here’s a breakdown of the traffic sources.

This also had an effect on my Adsense earnings that day and my Clickbank stats were also boosted substantially by these new visitors. Hopefully some of that traffic will return again.

So it just goes to show that submitting your web pages to social bookmarking sites can dramatically boost your traffic – and fast! In fact, I am glad that I only did this little test using only StumbleUpon because I reckon it would have brought my server down if I had submitted the page to more social bookmarking sites!

One thing’s for sure. Buying Traffic Landslide reminded me of just how powerful social bookmarking can be for driving traffic. It really lived up to its name in this instance didn’t it?

Update – 12th October 2008:

Well it looks like the traffic is still coming and I am even getting some from Facebook which is social bookmarking in action. All traffic sources sent a total of 3,428 visits of which 3,170 were from StumbleUpon and 251 direct visits plus a few others. This is a total of 6,937 visitors in two days with 6,407 of those coming via StumbleUpon.

I have to say that today it did not monetize very well in Adsense or ClickBank so it can’t have been very targeted traffic. I cant complain though after the first day which made me something in the order of 100 dollars from all sources. Not a fortune but by far the best day this site has ever had.

Update – 13th October 2008:

Traffic to this page is now dropping off but still very good at 1,627 visits with 1473 of those from StumbleUpon. Word seems to be getting around as there is traffic from new sources too.

Update – 14th October 2008:

The bubble has finally burst and traffic has fallen down to 24 visitors for the day but it was interesting while it lasted and made me some money too. Social bookmarking sites do bring in traffic and some of it may stick around if they like what they see. In general, though, I would not rely on them for long-term traffic.

Social bookmarking sites are a great source of traffic but traffic in itself is not the be all and end all. It must be highly targeted too and in this case it wasn’t, but it was still a worthwhile exercise. It makes far more sense to have 10 highly targeted visitors per day than thousands of curiosity seekers. Of course, this article only refers to using StumbleUpon for getting traffic and there are lots more Web 2.0 sites that you could use for bringing in visitors to your website.

One of the biggest problems any marketer faces is getting traffic to their website. No matter how good your website or your product, if you do not have traffic coming to your website it is not going to make you money. But what if there was a way for you to bring in visitor after visitor that was quick, easy and very powerful? I’ll leave you with a couple of links to resources that you may find useful if you need more website traffic but don’t know where to start.

Traffic exchanges are ‘hubs’ where webmasters can receive free or very cheap traffic – either via paying for credits or ‘clicking for credits’.

When you sign up with a traffic exchange, you are assigned your own ‘start page’, where you are rotated through views of other webmaster’s sites. Each time you view a site, you will earn credits. You then use all the credits you have amassed and use them to get more page views for your site. It may seem a bit pointless but if you do things right it does work.

What you need to do is refer other people to the traffic exchange in order to build a downline. For everyone you refer you get extra credits for the number of clicks they make.

• The more you bring on board the more credits you get just for doing nothing.

• And the more credits you have the more times your site is shown which means more traffic.

When you are first getting started traffic exchanges can be a free way of driving traffic to your site but you need to put spend at least an hour a day to get any results. I find the best way to use them is to send them to your ‘squeeze page’ where you give away a free report or something of value to encourage them to opt in to your list.

Obviously, the majority of people viewing your site in this situation are also wanting traffic, and hoping to sell something. But you can still squeeze leads and maybe even a few sales out of the average traffic exchange.

You may get only one or two signups a day but if you are struggling to build a list then an hour a day spent on a traffic exchange could be worth it.

This is especially true if you’re in the internet marketing business, and if your site appeals to newbie marketers. Just getting more eyeballs on your squeeze page will likely help you get more opt-ins; but, better yet, it gets you exposure and builds name recognition.

Here’s a good tip oh how to make an effective squeeze page.

The main thing is to design a simple but eye-catching page with something of value for your visitor, who will probably see it for only 15 seconds. If you can catch their attention then that is half the battle. But how do you decide what is an eye-catching page?

Easy.

While you are actively participating on a traffic exchange, make sure to study the pages that you see and take a note of the ones that caught your attention. Some are quite eye-catching and it’s a good idea to bookmark them to get ideas for your own squeeze pages. By the way, here’s a shameless plug for my own optin page, which receives daily visits from traffic exchanges and helps to build my list. And I have found that traffic exchanges do work for this purpose.

How to get more traffic exchange credits the smart way.

Imagine if you joined five traffic exchanges and participated on them for one hour a day each. That means you would be doing five hours of tedious clicking a day with most of that time wasted waiting for the timer to count down.

So why not condense all this down to one hour per day and get the same result?

Here’s how.

• Join 5-10 traffic exchanges.

• Start up your browser and open up five traffic exchange websites, each in their own tab across the top of the browser.

• Now loop through each traffic exchange in sequence by clicking on each tab with your mouse, or even better by using the keyboard shortcut (CTRL+TAB).

• Then click on each page in the active tab when the timer for that page has counted down and move on to the next.

It can be a bit confusing getting the timing right at first but once you have the hang of it you will be getting hundreds of credits spread over the five exchanges every day. This means thousands of page views for your site per month.

Try doing this for 30 days as an experiment and see if it has got you more subscribers to your list.

So it’s well worth giving traffic exchanges a try if you’re looking for marketing and building a list that is related to internet marketing. Don’t forget to refer people and build a good downline to get even more credits and more traffic to your squeeze page.
